Chapter Fourteen

Kit woke up just as the sun was rising. Teddy was sleeping next to her, her naked body exposed to the cool air-conditioning unit next to the bed. Her dark nipples were hard from the air, and she’d thrown an arm over her head, her hand in her hair. Her body was a magnificent landscape of muscles and smooth skin. Kit had looked at most of her tattoos before, but now, as Teddy slept, Kit followed their pattern closely over her firm body. Teddy’s skin was a uniform olive, suggesting that she either tanned naked or was, perhaps, that color naturally. Kit had to fight the urge to run her fingers along the smooth expanse of her exposed stomach, where the muscles stood out in firm relief.

Teddy looked worn and troubled, even in sleep. Kit knew she’d been keeping a brave face on for her and for Mrs. Williams yesterday. She’d sensed Teddy’s worry several times during the evening and wondered what Teddy would have done if she hadn’t needed to help her. She felt a sharp pang of guilt when she remembered Teddy saying she had friends to be with and places to go. Was she keeping her here in danger? While Kit didn’t want to ask, she knew she should and promised herself to ask Teddy about it when she woke up. Maybe she could stay here if Teddy knew a way out of town—it was still better than being at the hotel. The thought of Teddy leaving gave her an empty, hollow feeling in the pit of her stomach, and a prickle of tears stung her eyes.

As quietly as she could, she climbed out of bed and went into the bathroom. She washed her hot face in cool water and then stood there for a moment, eyes closed, taking deep, slow breaths to calm down. She opened her eyes and stared at herself in the mirror for a long time. Her feelings were chaotic, unsettled. Every moment she was with Teddy, she felt better, safer. Every time she thought about where this was inevitably going, she was almost physically ill. The smart thing to do would be to hold herself back, get whatever these feelings were under control. Maybe if Teddy left, it would be better. The thought made her stomach flip-flop again, and she cursed under her breath. She was being ridiculous.

She brushed her teeth before going into the sitting room, where they’d placed all of her luggage. She dug around in her backpack for her running clothes and slipped them on. She hadn’t been running since she’d been in Europe, and her body was craving the exercise. After days of heavy food and drink, and days of worry and heartache, she needed the endorphins. She scribbled a quick note to Teddy in the kitchen and took the map of the French Quarter from her purse.

The dogs looked up from their beds as she walked by in the living room, and she paused for a moment, wondering if she should let them outside in the backyard.
